The Problem

Skills that survived centuries are struggling to survive this decade

India's artisan households earn far below the national average, and every year more of their children leave the family craft for informal urban work. The knowledge doesn't transfer; it disappears. At the same time, industry struggles to find skilled hands, and an education system built around rote examinations pushes millions of young people towards degrees the job market cannot absorb.

These are really one problem, not two: a country that has stopped valuing skill as a form of knowledge. MakeMyIndia Foundation was founded to change that.

A developed India that still knows how to make things by hand

India has set itself the goal of becoming a developed economy by the centenary of its independence. We believe that a truly developed India is measured not only in GDP, but in whether its 3,000-plus documented craft traditions are still practised, taught and profitable, and in whether its skilled workforce finally gets the recognition, income and social standing it has always deserved.

That is the future MakeMyIndia Foundation is building towards: skill by skill, centre by centre, district by district.
